“Is it not clear, we have been asked, for example, that women also gain in power by making use of their ‘charms’, either in work or relationships to others? It seems to have been difficult to transmit the fact that our theory is founded on precisely this insight. It is precisely because we gain in competence through our bodily practices that we cling to them as we do. The drawback, however, is that in exercising this power, we simultaneously confine ourselves to one part of a wider world and one particular relationship to it. Even if we ignore the loss of living-time we suffer in learning to exercise this kind of power; even if we leave out of account the inexorable curtailment of that power with the onset of old age; even then, the pleasure we take in this kind of power still seems to us to drag us ever deeper into quicksand, digging us in further with every move we make. The marshland corpses we become may be attractive and well-preserved; but they are the bodies of women who, in the course of their lives, have influenced nothing save for the handful of men in their immediate surroundings.”
